Over time, boilers can wear down and become more and more unreliable, with the cost of repairs and breakdowns taking a heavy strain on the pocket of its owner.

Modern boilers are known to be more reliable and efficient, lasting longer than older models, once a boiler becomes not only inefficient, but unreliable, it is highly recommended that it is replaced.

Some older boilers can even be dangerous if over-used and worn, with the risk of dangerous emissions such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide increasing.

Many people choose a boiler replacement for this reason, but also a new boiler can be considered for environmental reasons – modern central heating boilers are known to be much more energy efficient with efficiency ratings over 90% in comparison to 50% in some older boilers, offering a payback in just a few years as well as be kinder to the environment.

There is more than the one option available when purchasing a boiler replacement. These are:

1) From a Local Plumbing & Heating Company

Many companies specialise in providing replacement boilers locally, these companies will often send an experienced boiler engineer to look at your current setup and talk you through the options for a new system, whether that’s just a new boiler or complete central heating system.

These companies will then purchase the boiler on your behalf, and use their own engineers to install, test and commission the boiler. Often these companies are long-established, and possibly the best choice if you value experience over a big brand.

Invariably these local companies can be referenced from local customers and are usually cheaper than the nationwide installers and energy suppliers.

2) From an Energy Supplier

The large energy suppliers such as British Gas, nPower and E.ON also provide boiler repair and installation services, they will send an engineer to assess the boiler you require and provide advice and ultimately a quote based on your specific needs.

These companies will source the boiler and have it installed in much the same manner as the local plumbing and heating companies, the advantage of using one of the nationwide installers is big brand protection in that they’re unlikely to go bust and can usually provide additional service such as ongoing boiler cover, the downside is that they’ll more than likely be more expensive.

Often their engineers are from a sister company or another part of the power suppliers business such as British Gas Boilers, and will also push the specific insurance policies that the energy supplier offers on boilers.
